Energy markets across the world are evolving at different speeds. However, they are all being shaped by three powerful forces. These 3 ‘Ds’ will change the way customers and market participants act:

  • Digitalisation – new technologies enabling real time management of assets at ever smaller scales;

  • Decarbonisation – the continued growth of renewable generation and reduced dependence on coal-fired power stations.

These forces will change electricity systems from inflexible, transmission-connected models to distribution-managed energy systems. This next-generation energy system will be low carbon, localised and smart. Electrification will lead to greater demand for electricity, but digitisation will match supply and demand in ever more efficient ways.
